2122/2017: Taxes on Oil Imports

2122/’17

Hon. Jayantha Samaraweera,— To ask the Minister of Petroleum Resources Development,—

(a) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the import tax levied by the government on a litre of petrol when importing petrol;

(ii) whether the government levies any other tax on a litre of petrol other than the import tax;

(iii) if so, what those taxes are; and

(iv) the amount levied as taxes on a litre of petrol separately in relation to each type of tax?

(b) Will he also inform this House—

(i) the total amount levied by the government as taxes on a litre of petrol, as the percentage of the retail price of a litre of petrol; and

(ii) the retail price at which a litre of petrol can be made available to the customer if all taxes imposed on a litre of petrol are lifted?

(c) Will he admit that—

(i) the imposition of various types of taxes on a litre of petrol by the government has resulted in the price of goods and services increasing; and

(ii) the prices of goods and services can be brought down if all taxes imposed on a litre of petrol by the government are lifted?

(d) If not, why?
