Hon. Heshan Withanage,— To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) annual quantity of required sugar consumption of Sri Lanka;
(ii) quantity of sugar imported to Sri Lanka from year 2011 to 2014, separately each year;
(iii) the areas that have been identified in Sri Lanka suitable for sugar production;
(iv) the quantity of sugar produced by each factory from year 2011 to 2013, separately each year;
(v) whether the quantity of sugar in aforesaid (i) cannot be produced within the country;
(vi) whether any measure has been taken to produce the quantity of sugar required for consumption without importing it ?
(b) If not, why ?

(iii) Ø The sugarcane cultivation is undertaken mainly in Moneragala and Ampara Districts and in Badulla District in small scale.
Ø The following districts have been identified as suitable areas for sugarcane cultivation by testing the soil samples with the assistance of Sugar Research Institute and Land Use Planning Committee in 2013/2014.

· Batticaloa

(Pelwatta and Sevanagala Sugar Factories were taken over by the Government on 11.11.2011 and these institutions were functioning under the private sector in 2011.)
(v) Annual sugar requirement is about 713,048 MT and 90 per cent of it can be produced in Sri Lanka. The sugarcane cultivating area of 17,000 hectares of land should be increased up to 130,000 hectares, and about ten (10) new factories have to be established.
(vi) The lands that are suitable for the sugar cultivation in the distsircts of Batticaloa, Mannar and Vavuniya have been indentified by Lanka Sugar Company (Pvt.) Limited and it is proposed to invite investors for the development of sugar industry.
