The major part of this event was sponsored by the Chairman of Arabian Royal Group of Companies. This was arranged by the Parliament co-ordinating secretary of Hon. Rauf Hakeem - the leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Mr.Hazan Al Fassi Sheriff and Mr.M.B.M. Hamza JP.

Every year the Muslims all over the world observe fasting for 30 days, during the month of Ramadan according to the Islamic calendar. Iftar refers to the evening meal for breaking the daily fast.

The holy month of Ramadan is given its significance for it allows one to build a sense of self-control and will-power, which can be beneficial throughout life in dealing with temptations and peer-pressure. Through fasting, Muslims learn to control their natural urges such as hunger, thirst and thus are able to better resist temptations for things which are not necessary, such as excessive food intake, drugs or other unhealthy or harmful substances and behaviors.

Parliament plans to celebrate this holy festival every year to come.
