A “Lakshmi pooja” seeking the blessing of Goddess “Lakshmi” was held at the Speaker’s residence during the Nava Rathri season of 2006. Lalshmi, according to Hindu tradition is the Goddess who gives wealth. The aforesaid Pooja was held in the evening of the 27th of September. This event was organised by the Honourable Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, Hon. Deputy Speaker and the Hon. Deputy Chairman of Committees with the assistance of the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs and the staff of the Secretary General of Parliament.
The colourful Pooja was conducted by the priest of Mayurapathi Sri Pathirakali Amman Temple, Colombo 6. An instrumental orchestra of Nadaswaram and Thavil was also arranged.
A “Bharatha Naatya” dance recital and a Sinhala classical music recital followed to suit the spiritual environment created by the Pooja.
Special invitees, several higher officials, Ministers and Members of Parliament attended this event.
