The Iftar ceremony-the evening meal of breaking the daily fast of the Ramadan month was observed at the at the Speaker’s official residence on the 17th of October 2006.
The event started at 5:30 pm in the evening and the invitees Hon.President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Members, Members of Parliament, Muslim leaders, leaders of other religions, and other diplomats were all present to take part in this special occasion.
Same as last year, this event was sponsored by the Chairman of the Arabian Royal Group of Companies, Mr.M.B.M. Hamza JP and was arranged by the Parliament co-ordinating secretary of Hon. Rauf Hakeem - the leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Mr.Hassan Al Fassi Sheriff.
The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is considered the most respected, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. This festive & holy season of Muslims all over the world, not only stresses fasting during the month but also prayers and charity.
This holy event, which is observed at the Speaker’s official residence every year by the initiative of the present Speaker, Hon.Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, focuses on establishing a religious and national unity in the country.
