Iftar Celebration 2007

The Iftar ceremony, which is the evening meal for breaking the daily fast of the Ramadan month, was observed on the 20 th of September 2007 at the Speaker’s official residence.

The event, which started in the evening, saw the presence of invitees including the Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors of Arab countries, Muslim leaders, leaders of other religions, and other diplomats too took part in this special occasion.

This event was once again sponsored by the Chairman of the Arabian Royal Group of Companies, Mr. M. B. M. Hamza JP and was arranged by Mr. M. Hassan Al Fassi Sheriff who is the Parliament co-ordinating secretary of Hon. Rauf Hakeem - leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is considered the most valued, sacred and spiritually beneficial month of the Islamic year. This festive & holy season of Muslims all over the world, not only stresses fasting during the month but also prayers and charity. Muslims also believe that feeding someone is a form of charity and is very rewarding.

This holy event, which is observed at the Speaker’s official residence every year by the initiative of Hon. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, focuses on establishing religious and national unity in our country.
