Ecstasy of Diyawanna Christmas Carols - 2007

The annual Christmas Carols Programme was held at the Hon. Speaker’s official residence on 20th December 2007. This year’s programme was named “Diyawanna Naththal Gee Mihira - 2007”.

From the early hours in the evening people started to gather in the official premises. As customary, the entire complex was decorated with flags. There were illuminations crib by the side of the portico and everything was well organised for the celebration of Christmas on a national level.

At the first half of the programme, the nativity event was enacted with meaningful and very renowned Sinhala and Tamil carols. Then special prayers were offered and the live crib was a fascinating feature that received attraction of the ones present.

The evening service commenced at 6 pm and took little more than thirty minutes. The entrance of the Holy Family into the special room to the sound of ‘magul bera’ was very significant. At the end of the service, the book titled “Deshiya naththal geethawaliyen mathuwana jayakodi piya lakuna ” written by Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph was released and copies were handed over to Hon. Speaker, Hon. Anura Priyadarshana Yapa the Minister of Mass Media & Information and other celebrities who were present for the occasion. Apart from them, Religious Dignitaries, Ministers, Members of Parliament, other distinguished guests and staff of the Parliament Secretariat also participated for the event. Then the carols service started outdoors.

To mark the event, the carols presented by different groups were very appropriate and inspired the people gathered. It should be mentioned here that Kalasuri Mr. Ivor Denise’s presence and presentation of some carols was very significant. He can be named as the connecting link of the past and the present. In addition, the rendering of Mrs. Latha Walpola’s “Namo Mariyani” & “Re Tharu Babalanawa” of Mrs. Angeline Gunathilake too was an attraction that received the acclaim of many.

Different groups representing their respective establishments such as Associated Newspapers Limited, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Independent Television Network, etc were supplemented by other choir groups.

As the crowd gathered, and were so well attuned to the beautiful carols, the facility was made for them to quench their thirst and have a meal of tasty food.

Another important event was the release of a CD of Mr. Ivor Denise’s songs selected for the event. The first copy was presented to First Lady Mrs. Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

The entire programme was recorded on video by the National Rupavahini and Independent Television Network and was telecast by National Rupavahini on Christmas night.
