0216/2018: Fishing families in Poongari

216/’18

Hon. Douglas Devananda,—To ask the Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development and Rural Economic Affairs,—

(a) Is he aware that —

(i) over 300 fishing families live in the village of Valaipadu in Poonarin Divisional Secretariat Division in the Killinochchi district;

(ii) out of those families, about hundred families are directly engaged in the fishing industry while the other families are employed in various other fields, but they are living without a sufficient income; and

(iii)  every day, the aforesaid fishermen harvest over 1,000 kilograms of crabs and other seafood which are sent to other places where they are processed and then sent to other parts of the country?

(b) Will he inform this house—

(i) whether steps will be taken to establish a seafood processing factory in this area taking into consideration the nature of the livelihood of these people;  and

(ii) if so, of the date on which it will be done?

(c) If not, why?
