1168/2017: INDUSTRIAL ZONE IN ULAPANE: DETAILS

Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage,— To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce,—

(a) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the amount of money that had been allocated by the previous government for the establishment of the industrial zone in Ulapane in Nawalapitiya Electorate;

(ii) of the number of factories that were started and run in the aforesaid industrial zone; and

(iii) of the number of factories that have been closed down by now?

(b) Will he also inform this House whether a new programme has been prepared to upgrade the industrial zone mentioned in (a) (i) above? 

(c) If not, why?

(a)          (i)       Rs. 90 million

             (ii)       Nineteen factories

            (iii)       Four  factories

                         However, measures are being taken to lease the land blocks allocated to the closed down factories to new industrialists after their project proposals are processed and recommended by the Regional Industrial Service Committee and Ministry’s Project Evaluation Committee and thereafter with the approval of the Cabinet Ministers.

   (b) Yes.

During the last two years, improvements have been made to infrastructure facilities by constructing drainage systems and by renovating main road about 1000 metres and byroads about 410 metres in length spending Rs. 29 million. Besides, street lampposts have been erected on both sides of the internal roads. It is planned to construct an administration building and install fire extinguishers in the industrial estate in this year. The Department of National Planning has allocated Rs. 20 million for these purposes.
