Hon. (Mrs.) Shanthi Sriskandarasa,— To ask the Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare,—
(a) Is he aware that —
(i) as per the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, No. 28 of 1996, special facilities should be made available for the disabled in buildings belonging to all public and private institutions providing services so that the disabled are able to access such buildings to obtain services;
(ii) within a period of eight years from the date of passage of the aforesaid Act, arrangements should be made to provide the aforesaid facilities in all buildings from which services are provided by either the public sector or the private sector to ensure that disabled persons can access such buildings and obtain services; and
(iii) state and private sector service providers do not appear to have made the aforesaid facilities available in their institutions as yet?
(b) Will he inform this House whether steps will be taken to provide the aforementioned facilities so that the disabled can access buildings without difficulty and fulfil their requirements?
(c) If not, why?
