Hon. Indika Anuruddha Herath,— To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) the traditional handloom industry has run into a serious crisis;
(ii) the demand for these products has increased and a high price can be obtained for quality products; and
(iii) this industry is widespread in the Gampaha District and the previous government provided machinery and skills to about 300 traditional industrialists in Madampella area, Divulapitiya?
(b) Will he inform this House of the number of —
(i) families engaged in this industry as a household industry;
(ii) weaving centres; and
(iii) officers available for the provision of facilities;
in Gampaha district?
(c) Will he state—
(i) whether he has looked into the situation of the persons referred to in (a) (iii) above;
(ii) the number of persons engaged in the industry as of now;
(iii) their monthly output; and
(iv) as to whom they sell them to?
(d) Will he also state—
(i) whether there is a programme to supply raw materials which are in short supply;
(ii) whether there is a programme to purchase the products or link up with buyers;
(iii) whether training workshops and sales promotion programmes are conducted;
(iv) if so, the date on which such was held last; and
(v) the programme for the development of the industry?
(e) If not, why?
