0784/2016: Domestic Floral Industry - Gampaha District

Hon. Indika Anuruddha Herath,— To ask the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife,—

(a) Is he aware that there are nearly 5000 persons involved in the flowers and exotic leaf related industry in the Gampaha district with nearly 28 societies were provided with encouragement by the previous government?

(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) whether a census has been conducted on Divisional Secretariat  level on the persons involved in this industry;

(ii) if so, the number of cultivators and sellers of Orchid, Anthurium and exotic leaves and the number of small, medium and large scale cultivators and exporters of flowers in relation to each Divisional Secretary’s Division separately; and

(iii) of the measures taken in 2015  and in the first quarter of 2016 to encourage and retain the persons mentioned in (a) above in the industry and absorb novices into it as well as the concessions granted, amount of money allocated for that and the number of beneficiaries?

(c) Will he also inform this House of the number of researches conducted, species of flowers produced and the number of flower businessmen to whom plants were given by the Tissue Culture Centre established in the Gampaha Botanical Garden through the University of Kelaniya by the previous government at a cost of Rs. 22 million?

(d) If not, why?
