0571/2016: Low Income families affected by wild elephant attacks

Hon. Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana,— To ask the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife,—

(a) Is he aware that a number of huts which had been built amidst severe economic hardships by the people who settled again in Kokkadichcholai, Wellaveli, Kiran, Chenkalady, Vakarai, and Vaunathivu Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Batticaloa District after the war has ended have been destroyed due to attacks by wild-elephants?

(b) Will he inform this House —

(i) of the number of huts that have been destroyed by wild-elephants;

(ii) separately of the number of people who were killed and the number of those who have been injured due to attacks by wild-elephants; and

(iii) of the number of persons who have lost their livelihood consequent to the destruction of paddy lands and chena cultivations by                  wild-elephants?

(c) Will he also inform this House —

(i) whether an arrangement is in place to construct houses for those who have been rendered homeless, and to pay compensation for those who were killed, to those who have been injured and to those who have lost their livelihood consequent to attacks by                      wild-elephants;

(ii) if so, of the number of persons who have been paid compensation for those who were killed and for those who have been affected; and

(iii) separately of the value of the compensation paid to such persons on Divisional Secretariat Division basis?

(d) If not, why?
