446/’16

Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage,— To ask the Prime Minister and Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs,—

(a) Is he aware that—

(i) 7000 pine trees are being felled and removed in Samanalagama  in Nawalapitiya range under the Department of Forest Conservation in Kandy district;

(ii) arrangements have been made to fell and remove through private traders the pine trees in 200 acres in Mapakanda, Nawalpitiya and in 50 acres in Malgolla, Dolosbage; and

(iii) eventhough permission had been obtained to remove only 2500 trees in Paragala section of Dolosbage, nearly 12000 trees have been felled and removed by now without authorization?

(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the procedures followed in granting approval for the removal of all the trees mentioned above and the names of the officers involved;

(ii) whether he admits that a huge amount of money due to the government has been lost as a result; and

(iii) of the legal action that would be taken against the officers involved in those fraudulent actions?

(c) If not, why?
