Hon. Sunil Handunnetti,— To ask the Minister of Power & Energy,—
(a) Will he admit the fact that —
(i) as pointed out by the Auditor General’s Report for the year 2006, tenders were called to purchase 21000 wooden poles with a length of 9 metres and 3400 wooden poles with a length of 10 metres;
(ii) the tender with lowest bids submitted by the State Timber Corporation was not accepted; and
(iii) the tender was awarded to the South African Company that submitted the next lowest bids?
(b) Is he aware that —
(i) 10,500 wooden poles with a length of 9 metres and 1700 wooden poles with a length of 10 metres were purchased; and
(ii) of the 2363 poles provided to the Southern Province only 73 had been used?
(c) Will he admit that a loss of Rs. 79.5 million had to be incurred owing to the fact that the tender was not awarded to the State Timber Corporation?
(d) Will he state the names of those who are responsible for the aforesaid loss?
(e) If not, why?
