366/’15

Hon. Bimal Rathnayake,— To ask the Minister of Finance,—

(a) Is he aware that—

(i) senior Sri Lankan citizens were provided the opportunity to deposit an amount of  Rs.10 lakhs in state banks for an interest rate of 15%, through the interim budget presented on 29th January 2015;and

(ii) the opportunity was granted to deposit another amount of Rs.5 lakhs for the same interest rate?

(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) whether the amount mentioned in (a) (ii) above could be deposited in state banks;

(ii) whether that amount could be deposited in private banks for the same interest rate;

(iii) whether that amount could be deposited only in private financial institutions; and

(iv) if it is possible with private financial institutions only, whether the government would take responsibility for the monies deposited by the senior citizens according to these budget proposals, in case those institutions went bankrupt?

(c) If not, why?
