Hon.Vijitha Herath,— To ask the Minister of Education,—
(a) Is he aware that —
(i) the Weliganga Primary School located in Mawathura village belonging to the Gampola Education Zone is faced with the threat of closure;
(ii) the students of this school have to walk a distance of approximately 3 kilometers twice a day owing to this school been located on the summit of a hill;
(iii) even the teachers of this school are reluctant to report for duty in this school owing to the difficulties they face on the way, i.e., walking through a deserted road with woody areas and even passing a graveyard;
(iv) a land with a building which belonged to the Ministry of Plantation Industries had been purchased by the Ministry of Education to re-establish this school in another location steering clear of these difficult conditions; and
(v) the re-establishment of this school in the new building has been avoided owing to the influence of the manager of the estate to which the land and the building stated in (iv) above belong to?
(b) Will he inform this House —
(i) whether steps will be taken to develop this school without letting it to be closed down in order to ensure the betterment of the students and the parents of the school while evading the influences mentioned in (a) (v) above; and
(ii) if so, of the measures taken to that effect?
(c) If not, why?
