0193/2015: Army Intelligence Officers arrested regards to Prageeth Eknaligoda case

193/’15

Hon. Jayantha Samaraweera,— To ask the Minister of Defence,—

(a) Is he aware that-

(i) 11 officers attached to and retired from the military intelligence division have been arrested and being questioned in connection with the disappearance of Prageeth Eknaligoda;

(ii) on an order issued by the Homagama Magistrate’s Court in this regard, confidential documents, photographs and reports kept at the Giritale Army Camp have been removed from the said camp by the Criminal Investigations Department for inspection;

(iii) as a result of these measures there is a danger of classified information pertaining to national security being disclosed;

(iv) there could be a negative impact on national security as military intelligence officers could be disheartened in view of this incident leading to the weakening of intelligence related activities; and

(v) the disclosure of the identity of intelligence officers as a result of this process can place their lives in grave danger as in the case of Millennium City incident in 2002?

(b) Will he inform this House-

(i) the place at which the intelligence officers mentioned in (a) (i) are detained at present, and the officer who is in charge of them; and

(ii) the measures taken to thwart the threats that may be posed against the officers of military intelligence as a result of the above process and protect them?

(c) If not, why?
