Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) the forests coming under the Department of Wildlife Conservation get destroyed owing to Chena cultivation, poaching and various development projects;
(ii) it is due to the interference of higher officials and politicians that the aforesaid destructions cannot be prevented; and
(iii) the above destruction of forests brings about political, economic and social repercussions on the entire Sri Lanka?
(b) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the number of persons who have been found guilty by law for committing the offenses of engaging in poaching and Chena cultivation in these forests during the period of last two years;
(ii) whether steps have been taken to put and end to poaching and Chena cultivation conducted inside conservations; and
(iii) if so, what those steps are?
(c) Will he also inform this House—
(i) whether the human and physical resources currently available for the protection of the conservations are satisfactory; and
(ii) if not, of the steps that will be taken to tighten the protection of conservations?
(d) If not, why?
