0043/2015: BROILER CHICKEN FARMS : DETAILS

Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Rural Economic Affairs,—

(a) Is he aware that—

(i) there are certain issues with regard to the health of Broiler chicken reared for meat in Sri Lanka;

(ii) the farm owners kill those animals  for meat before the expiration of the recommended number of days; and

(iii) the drugs and types of food given to these animals for quick growth are harmful to the human body?

(b) Will he inform this House separately—

(i) the number of farms that rear Broiler chicken for meat in Sri Lanka;

(ii) the numbers of chicks in these farms;

(iii) the production of Chicken (kilogrammes) in 2014;and

(iv) accordingly, the per capita consumption of chicken?

(c) Will he state—

(i) whether steps have been taken to address the issues mentioned in (a) above; and

(ii) if so, what those steps are?

(d) If not, why?

(a)          (i)      According to the data available at the Department of Animal Production and Health, there is no health issue related to Broiler chicken.

              (ii)      There is no fixed time period for slaughtering of Broilers.

            (iii)      According to the existing records, the drugs and feeds which are used in Broiler production have no adverse effects on human body.
