4952/2014: Beach erosion - Mahawewa to Katuneriya

Hon. Niroshan Perera,— To ask the Prime Minister and Minister of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs,—

(a) Will he state whether he is aware that the coastal belt from Mahawewa to Katuneriya in the Puttlam District is being severely eroded by the sea?

(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the measures that have been taken to prevent coastal erosion in the said area;

(ii) whether it has not been possible to prevent coastal erosion even after taking those measures; and

(iii) if so, why?

(c) Will he also state—

(i) separately, the number of houses destroyed or in danger of being destroyed as a result of coastal erosion in the said area;

(ii) whether a programme to pay compensation for the houses and property destroyed has been commenced;

(iii) the methodology adopted in valuation of damage to pay compensation; and

(iv) the measures taken to safeguard the lives of the people displaced owing to coastal erosion?

(d) If not, why?
