Hon. Akila Viraj Kariyawasam,— To ask the Minister of Higher Education,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) parts of the syllabus for Medical Science are being removed instead of adding new fields of study to Medical Science to suit the present, and that provisions allocated in this regard are being reduced;
(ii) under the above circumstances as mentioned by the Sri Lanka Medical Council, the section on surgery is being removed from the syllabus; and
(iii) the efforts made to develop a quality medical service have been jeopardized by that ?
(b) Will he state—
(i) the subjects that have been recommended for the degree in Medicine at present;
(ii) the reasons for removing the field of surgery from the syllabus of the degree in Medicine;
(iii) whether knowledge in the field of surgery would not be of great use in producing a quality doctor; and
(iv) whether action will be taken the field of surgery in the syllabus of the said degree on a fulltime basis without removing it from the Medical degree ?
(c) If not, why ?
