Hon. K. Ilankumaran,— To ask the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism,— (2)
(a) Will he state —
(i) the reasons for the significant delay in issuing passports to Sri Lankans living abroad;
(ii) whether he is aware that they have been unable to fly for urgent needs due to the said delay;
(iii) whether compensation or priority will be given to applicants who have been aggrieved due to the said delay;
(iv) the measures that will be taken to expedite and facilitate the process related to the issuance of the said passports;
(v) whether attention will be paid to digital or biometric methods to reduce the delay;
(vi) the nature of the cooperation between the Department of Immigration and Emigration and Foreign Embassies in providing expedited services; and
(vii) whether mobile services or on-site services will be introduced in countries where large numbers of Sri Lankans live in?
(b) Will he also state —
(i) whether special units will be established in Sri Lankan Embassies to handle urgent legal matters; and
(ii) the future measures that will be taken to provide optimal services to Sri Lankans living abroad?
(c) If not, why?
