Hon. Mayilvaganam Jegatheeswaran,— To ask the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources,— (1)
(a) Will he state —
(i) whether he is aware that illegal fishing activities are being carried out in the Mullaitivu and Mannar districts using prohibited fishing methods and unauthorized fishing vessels;
(ii) if so, the measures that have been taken to curb those activities; and
(iii) the measures that will be taken in the future to strengthen the surveillance and the operational activities in that regard?
(b) Will he also state —
(i) the impact of the aforesaid illegal fishing activities on the quality of fish production in the Mullaitivu and Mannar districts;
(ii) whether a survey has been conducted regarding the impact of aforesaid illegal fishing activities on the economy of the fishermen in aforesaid districts;
(iii) the measures that have been taken to secure the livelihoods and the income of the ordinary fishermen affected by aforesaid illegal fishing activities?
(iv) the reasons for not adequately enforcing the law to curb these illegal fishing activities; and
(v) whether a proper coordination is being maintained between the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Police to combat these illegal fishing activities?
(c) If not, why?
