Hon. Lieutenant Commander (Rtd.) Prageeth Madhuranga,—To ask the Minister of Defence,— (1)
(a) Will he inform this House —
(i) of the number of the officers and those of the other ranks of the Tri- Forces of Sri Lanka who have deserted the service for various reasons and have gone abroad without obtaining leave;
(ii) whether he accepts that the said personnel have gone abroad owing to the economic crisis that prevailed during the previous government, and they are currently remitting a large amount of foreign exchange to Sri Lanka by engaging in various jobs;
(iii) whether he is aware that they are arrested upon their return to Sri Lanka since they have not legally left the military service;
(iv) of the action that are taken against the personnel of the Tri- Forces who are arrested; and
(v) whether arrangements will be made to minimize the time taken for their lawful discharge from the military service?
(b) If not, why?
