(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) whether steps will be taken to start the Kallaru reservoir drinking water supply scheme; and

(ii) if so, the date on which the scheme will commence?

(c) If not, why?

Question History

Answer

(a)           (i)       The current water supply consistently meets drinking water quality standards on most days. However, given the significant increase in water demand, the surge in new connection requests and the prevailing drought conditions, there is a heightened risk of over-extracting groundwater, potentially leading to saltwater intrusion and increasing water quality parameter levels.

              (ii)      Yes.

(b) (i) The National Water Supply and Drainage Board initiated the project, which has subsequently been incorporated into the NWSDB’s Corporate Plan and has taken every step outlined therein.

(ii) The project is scheduled for implementation from 2024 to 2028, subject to obtaining land consent for the proposed Kallaru Reservoir from the Forest Department.

(c) Not relevant.
