Hon. Eran Wickramaratne,— To ask the Minister of Higher Education,—
(a) Is he aware—
(i) that Ms. Sunila Abeysekera, recipient of the UN Human Rights prize in 1998, was not granted permission to speak at the University of Colombo at an event organized by the Faculty of Law and Centre for Study of Human Rights in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator’s office on December 10th 2010; and
(ii) that UN had cancelled that event due to Ms. Sunila Abeysekera being refused permission to speak ?
(b) Will he state—
(i) as to why Ms. Sunila Abeysekera, was not allowed to speak at the aforesaid event;
(ii) whether there is a policy to determine as to who could speak at a university; and
(iii) if so, what is the Policy ?
(c) Will he state as to how the universal learning and knowledge which requires freedom of thought and freedom of expression is promoted within universities?
(d) If not, why?
