Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations,—(1)
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) in Qatar has imposed new regulations that all the professional engineers working under that government need to register under that Ministry;
(ii) the professionals who do not register will be subjected to a three years imprisonment or a fine of 100 000 riyal;
(iii) Sri Lanka too has obtained this MME approval only for a few educational institutions;
(iv) there are more institutions in Sri Lanka that can be included in this MME list; and
(v) countries like India and Philippines have registered institutions that are low in quality and employment opportunities of our professionals are at stake?
(b) Will he state that—
(i) whether steps have been taken to update the MME list;
(ii) if so, the names of the new institutions included in the list;
(iii) whether the government has taken any steps on behalf of the Sri Lankan professionals who have lost jobs due to the unavailability of the aforesaid approval; and
(iv) if so, the steps that have been taken?
(c) If not, why?
