Hon. Vidura Wickramanayaka,— To ask the Minister of Industry & Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, Co-operative Development and Vocational Training & Skills Development,—
(a) Is he aware that—
(i) the Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Ltd. of East Hewagama Korale is facing a situation where daily services required by the people cannot be provided because of an irregularity that had taken place involving deposits amounting to Rs.54 crores deposited with the Rural Bank branches of the said Multi-purpose Cooperative Society;
(ii) the depositors and members of the Multi-purpose Cooperative Society are facing a problematic situation as a result of not being able to withdraw the deposits;
(iii) the employees of the Multi-purpose Cooperative Society might even lose their jobs as a result of this situation; and
(iv) the entire co-operative system is facing the danger of degeneration as relevant services collapse day by day owing to this fraud?
(b) Will he inform this House whether necessary action will be taken to solve this crisis speedily?
(c) If not, why?
