Hon. Ananda Aluthgamage,— To ask the Minister of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the functions of the National Council for the Elderly and the National Secretariat for Elders;
(ii) of the programmes that were implemented in 2017 for promoting public welfare; and
(iii) the amount of money that was spent of those programmes?
(b) Will he admit that—
(i) the number of the elderly in the population in Sri Lanka is rapidly increasing at present;
(ii) the majority of the elderly do not have any means making a living;
(iii) they do not have adequate knowledge about ways of making a living; and
(iv) they have been rendered helpless as their children have refused to look after them?
(c) If so, will he inform this House of the nature of the measures that will be taken to remedy this situation?
(d) If not, why?
