0450/2019: NAWALAPITIYA PUBLIC MARKET: ANNUAL RENT FROM SHOPKEEPERS

Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage,— To ask the Minister of Internal & Home Affairs and Provincial Councils & Local Government,—

(a) Will he inform this House—

(i) whether he is aware that a public market has been constructed in Nawalapitiya town by the Urban Development Authority under the Nawalapitiya  Urban  Development Programme;

(ii) of the institutions that disbursed money for the land in which the public market is constructed and for the construction work of the public market;

(iii) of the annual rent collected by the Nawalapitiya Uarban Council   from the shop keepers of the public market in the year in which it was commenced;

(iv) whether he is aware that the present Urban Council has increased the annual rent by 1500%;

(v) whether he admits the  fact that the businessmen are unable to pay the aforesaid rent, which has been increased by 1500% at once; and

(vi) whether he will instruct the Nawalapitiya Urban Council to review the aforesaid situation again and fix a reasonable rent?

(b) If not, why?
