Hon. Kanaka Herath,— To ask the Minister of Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs,—
(a) Will he inform this House —
(i) Whether he is aware that a large number of local and foreign tourists visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and that the said orphanage generates the highest income for the Department of National Zoological Gardens;
(ii) of the number of foreign tourists that visited the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage from 2015 to 2018 separately as per each quarter; and
(iii) of the income generated by the Orphanage from the year 2015 to 2018 as per each year and quarter?
(b) Will he state—
(i) the reasons for depriving the tourists who visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage of the opportunity to feed milk to baby elephants, if such has been done;
(ii) the loss annually incurred by the institution owing to this situation;
(iii) whether a certain programme will be put in place by the government to develop the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage which is deemed as a valuable asset to Sri Lanka; and
(iv) if so, what that programme is?
(c) If not, why?
