Hon. Kanaka Herath,— To ask the Minister of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment,—
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the area brought under pepper cultivation in Sri Lanka;
(ii) of the pepper yield of this country from 2015 to 2018, separately for each year;
(iii) of the amount of pepper exported from this country from 2015 to 2018, separately for each year;
(iv) whether an amount of pepper exceeding that produced locally, has been exported within the said years;
(v) if so, whether pepper is imported to Sri Lanka; and
(vi) of the countries from which pepper is imported to Sri Lanka?
(b) Will he also inform this House—
(i) whether he is aware of the fact that only a few high level businessmen enjoy benefits as a result of importing pepper to Sri Lanka while it is destroying pepper cultivation in the country causing injustice to the innocent pepper farmers;
(ii) whether any programme is implemented to uplift pepper industry again;
(iii) if so, what that programme is; and
(iv) of the date on which that programme will be implemented?
(c) If not, why?
