0354/2019: Police complaint on 248/177/MOIB dated 2017.02.13

Hon. Mohamadu Nazeer,— To ask the Prime Minister and Minister of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement & Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development, Vocational Training & Skills Development and Youth Affairs,—

(a) Is he aware that —

(i) the Toyota Noah motor vehicle numbered EP JA-7555, two Samsung mobile phones, a Nokia mobile phone, national identity cards and several driving licences and a travelling bag that contained money, together with the suspect who was connected with the incident relating to the complaint No. 248/177/MOIB dated 13.02.2017 lodged with the Gampaha Police station were handed over to the Kalutara District Crime Division on 01.05.2017 by a group of civilians;

(ii) the aforesaid suspect had been detained at the Panadura Police Station from 01.05.2017 to 06.05.2017 in contravention of legal provisions; and

(iii) the Inspector General of Police was informed by the then Secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order and Southern Development through his letter bearing reference MLO/MO/OUT/147/17 dated 29.08.2017 to carry out an investigation into the aforesaid incident?   

(b) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the nature of action that has been taken regarding the aforesaid incident, and of the present progress of implementing such action; and

(ii) of the nature of the steps that have been taken to serve justice to the aggrieved party? 

(c) If not, why?
