1178/2017: BUSINESSES ESTABLISHMENTS IN JAFFNA TOWN BY 1983: DETAILS

Hon. Padma Udhayashantha Gunasekera,—To ask the Minister of Industry and Commerce,—

(a) Will he inform this House—

(i) of the number of small, medium and large-scale businesses that were in existence within the Jaffna town by 1983;

(ii) how many of them were belonged to Tamil businessmen;

(iii) how many were belonged to persons of Sinhalese or some other race; and

(iv) whether he will table a full report in this regard?

(b) Will he also inform this House—

(i) whether the businesses that had been run by Tamil and Sinhalese businessman in the year 1983 still continue;

(ii) if not, whether the persons who had been running those businesses or their heirs still live within the Jaffna District; and

(iii) if so, whether he will table a full report in this regard?

(c) If not, why?

(a)          (i)       There is no record or information available at the Ministry or offices coming under the purview of the Ministry in regard to the number of small, medium and large-scale business that were in existence within the Jaffna town by 1983.  Even District Secretariat, Jaffna does not have any particulars. However, according to the information available at the Department of Census and Statistics, the number of industries existed in the District of Jaffna in the year 1982 were as follows:

(ii) There is no record available to answer this question.

(iii) There is no record available to answer this question.

(iv) No. A report cannot be tabled as there is no information available to prepare a report in this regard.

(b) (i) There is no information available in this regard, therefore it is not possible to answer this question.

(ii) It is not possible to answer this question due to non-availability of records in this regard.

(iii) A report cannot be tabled as there is no information available in this regard.
