4508/2014: SUBMERGING OF AKURANA TOWN: SOLUTIONS

Hon.   Abdul Haleem,— To ask the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management,—

(a) Is he aware that —

(i) the Akurana town was submerged by rainwater at different occasions during the last fifteen years;

(ii) a massive damage has been caused to places of business and residents owing to the town being submerged;

(iii) the Kandy-Jaffna main road (A-9) could not be used when the Akurana town was under water;

(iv) portions of buildings erected by blocking the stream that flows through the town, were removed on the instructions of the officials when the Akurana town was submerged in 1997;

(v) silt in that stream was dredged twice at a cost of Rs. 5 million contributed by the Akurana Grand Mosque and the residents of the area;

(vi) all timber mills located close to the stream were removed; and

(vii) however, Akurana town was submerged once again by the rain that fell on the 31st October 2013?

(b) Will he state whether steps will be taken to device a permanent solution to the problem of Akurana town submerging upon a study by the line ministry with the involvement of the other ministries?

(c) If not, why?
