Hon. W. H. M. Dharmasena,— To ask the Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development,—(1)
(a) Will he inform this House—
(i) of the extent of arable lands owned by the Pelwatte and Sevanagala Sugar Factories of the Lanka Sugar Company (Private) Limited, separately;
(ii) of the extent of the said lands used and not used for cultivation purposes, separately;
(iii) whether sugar and ethanol production activities in the said factories are taking place at the expected level;
(iv) of the annual sugar production and sales made by the said factories from the year 2020 up to now;
(v) whether he knows that sugarcane farmers have been inconvenienced by the pause of the process of obtaining sugarcane by the said factories;
(vi) in view of the fact that it is reported that employees’ salaries are not paid and the contributions to the Employees’ Provident Fund and Employees’ Trust Fund are not paid by the relevant companies properly, whether action will be taken to overcome the said situation; and
(vii) of the measures taken to ensure the proper functioning of these companies and the proper fulfillment of workers' rights?
(b) If not, why?
