Hon. Mayilvaganam Jegatheeswaran,— To ask the Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure,— (1)
(a) Will he state —
(i) whether steps have been taken to recognize the Palmyrah tree, which significantly supports the livelihoods of the people of the Northern Province, as an important tree in Sri Lanka;
(ii) of the measures that have been taken to prevent the destruction of Palmyrah trees due to negligence, urbanization and deforestation;
(iii) whether special projects have been implemented to promote Palmyrah Cultivation in the Northern Province;
(iv) whether steps will be taken to cultivate Palmyrah in other provinces as well;
(v) whether the provincial councils, local authorities, and community-based organizations will be coordinated to promote Palmyrah Cultivation;
(vi) whether allocations will be made for Palmyrah cultivation; and
(vii) whether a Development Commission will be established regarding Palmyrah?
(b) Will he also state —
(i) of the steps that have been taken to encourage Palmyrah-based small industries, rural institutes, and Women’s Cooperative Societies;
(ii) of the steps that have been taken to sell Palmyrah-based products in the international market; and
(iii) whether steps will be taken to increase the foreign exchange revenue of Sri Lanka by that?
(c) If not, why?
