Hon. T.K. Jayasundara,— To ask the Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure,— (1)
(a) Will he admit that —
(i) the decline in the production of raw tea leaves is a major problem relating to the tea industry;
(ii) infertility of the soil and increase of the acidity of the soil due to the cultivation of tea for a long time in tea lands have resulted in this situation;
(iii) the Tea Research Institute and universities have confirmed that the tea lands can be made fertile in the long term by using Bio Charcoal produced from the bamboo plant; and
(iv) the use of Bio Charcoal can rapidly increase the fertilizer absorption capacity of the soil against the amount of fertilizer applied, and therefore excessive application of fertilizer can be controlled?
(b) Will he inform this House —
(i) if so, of the policy of the government in that regard; and
(ii) whether necessary measures will be taken regarding this matter in collaboration with the institutions related to the tea industry?
(c) If not, why?
