110/2020 Hon. Buddhika Pathirana,— To ask the Minister of Health,— Is she aware that— there are a large number of medicinal plants endemic to Sri Lanka; patents have not been obtained for the chemical substances and genetic elements contained in certain such plants; and as a result, a tremendous economic loss is ceased to this country? Will she state— whether a survey has been conducted regarding medicinal plants endemic to Sri Lanka; if so, the number of medicinal plants endemic to Sri Lanka; the number of such plants for which patents are owned by Sri Lanka; the names of such plants; and whether measures will be taken to obtain patents for medicinal plants which do not have patents? Will she state the foreign exchange income that the Government derives annually from the medicines or other products manufactured using plants for which patents are owned? Will she also inform the House what courses of action have been adopted to — uplift the medicinal or other products manufactured using plants for which patents are owned; and increase foreign exchange income for the products? If not, why?
