The internship programme in the Parliament organized by Parliament of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the National Democratic Institute (NDI) for the years 2023/2024 was commenced yesterday (Oct. 23). Accordingly, the inauguration of the training was held under the patronage of Acting Secretary General of Parliament Mr. Chaminda Kularatne.
A group of 48 students representing universities across the island as new interns have qualified for this year's training. Addressing the new interns, the Acting Secretary General of the Parliament pointed out that it is a rare opportunity among the hundreds of thousands of university students to have a training at the highest institution in Sri Lanka. Accordingly, he advised the new interns to acquire all the knowledge and experience they can get in every period of time they spend in the Parliament in the next 06 months. Also, the Acting Secretary General said that interns should use this opportunity to protect the dignity of their university and further develop its reputation.
Serjeant at Arms of Parliament Mr. Narendra Fernando, Director of Administration Ms. G. Tachchanarani, Director of Legislative Services and Acting Director of the Department of Communication Mr. H.E. Janakantha Silva, Director of Catering and Housekeeping Services Mr. R.H Edirisinghe, Coordinating Engineer Mr. L.D Adhikari, Deputy Hansard Editor (English) Ms. Kokila Samarasekara briefed the interns on the Parliamentary system and procedure. The new interns then joined an observation tour of the Parliament, where relevant information was provided by the Public Service Section of the Department of Communication of Parliament.
Heads of departments of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and officials of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) were present on this occasion.
