Poppies pinned in Parliament to commemorate Remembrance Day |

In line with the Remembrance Day, a Poppy flower was pinned on the Prime Minister Hon. Dinesh Gunawardene in Parliament yesterday (Oct.18) by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association, Major General Upul Perera.
Subsequently, Poppy flowers were pinned on the Speaker, Hon. Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, and the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Sajith Premadasa. Poppy flowers were also pinned on the Members of Parliament and the Secretary General of Parliament Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera.
The Remembrance Day is held annually to commemorate the war heroes who sacrificed their lives during the First and Second World Wars as well as the civil conflicts in Sri Lanka for 30 years. The income earned by selling the Poppy flowers is used for the welfare of the retired and disabled war veterans.
General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s Association Lieutenant Colonel Ajith Siyambalapitiya, Treasurer Major Shanthilal Kankanamge and Chairman of the Memorial Committee Brigadier Hemantha Liyanage, Committee members Captain T.M.H. Madugalla, K. L. S. Jayaweera, R. B. Jayatissa, (Mrs.) D.R.A Padmini were also present.
