Determination of the Supreme Court
The Speaker announced to the Parliament today (05) that he received the Determination of the Supreme Court in respect of the Bill titled “INLAND REVENUE (AMENDMENT)” which was challenged in the Supreme Court in terms of Article 121(1) of the Constitution.
For reasons provided in the Determination, the Supreme Court has held that neither the Bill nor any of its provisions is inconsistent with Article 12 or any provisions of the Constitution.
Accordingly, the Bill can be validly passed by a simple majority of the legislature.
Change in Committee Members
The Speaker inform that Hon. Nimal Lanza, Hon. Nalaka Bandara Kottegoda, and Hon. (Mrs.) Manjula Dissanayake, Members of Parliament have been nominated to serve in the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Alleviating the Impact of the Economic Crisis by the Committee of Selection on the 01st of September 2023, in terms of the provisions of the Standing Order 130(3) of the Parliament, to fill the vacancies occurred due to the resignations of Hon. (Prof.) Ranjith Bandara, Hon. S. B. Dissanayake, and Hon. Dhammika Perera, Members of Parliament from the Membership of the said Committee.
Hon. Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Member of Parliament, was also nominated to serve in the Sectoral Oversight Committee on An Open & Accountable Government by the Committee of Selection on the 01st of September 2023, in terms of the provisions of the Standing Order 130(3) of the Parliament, to fill the vacancy occurred due to the resignation of Hon. (Dr.) Major Pradeep Undugoda, Member of Parliament.
Motion may be moved to refer the question of privilege
The Hon. Speaker further announced that a motion may be moved to refer the question of privilege raised by the Hon. (Dr.) (Ms.) Harini Amarasuriya, in Parliament on 18th July 2023 to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Moreover, the Hon. Speaker announced that a motion may be moved to refer the question of privilege raised by the Hon. (Dr.) Susil Premajayantha, Leader of the House in Parliament on 25th August 2023 to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
