PARLIAMENT

The inaugural meeting of the Giriulla Regional Student Parliament was held at the Giriulla Wickramasheela National School Auditorium recently (Sep. 24) with the presence of Mr. Tikiri K. Jayathilake, Assistant Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.

The purpose of the Student Parliament concept is to create a practical space for the school community in Sri Lanka to enhance knowledge regarding democracy, responsibility and accountability as well as the importance of voting.

Bringing the experiences of a democratic way of life closer to the students, the inaugural meeting of the first meeting of the Giriulla Regional Student Parliament was proudly held with the participation of the Giriulla Regional Education Director D. M. Ranjani Thennakone, Deputy Director of Education (Development) L. S. R.  Jayasinghe, Assistant Director of Education (Social Sciences) A. J. M Nayana Abeyratne and Assistant Director of Education (Informal) K.K.L.N. Chandrapala. At this meeting, the Speaker was elected from among the members of that region.

In addition to that, the Deputy Speaker and the Deputy Chairperson of Committees were elected from among the members followed by which the members took their oath/affirmation in front of the Speaker.

Student representatives, subject teachers and parents of more than thirty schools in the Giriulla Educational Zone participated in this event.
