The Iftar ceremony, which is the evening meal for breaking the daily fast of the Ramadan month, was observed on the 11th of September 2008 at the Speaker’s official residence.

The event, which started in the evening, saw the presence of invitees including the Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors of Arab countries, Muslim leaders, leaders of other religions, and various diplomats.

As usual, this event was once again sponsored by the Chairman of the Arabian Royal Group of Companies, Mr. M. B. M. Hamza JP and was arranged by Mr. M. Hassan Al Fassi Sheriff who is the Parliamentary Co-ordinating Secretary of Hon. Rauf Hakeem - leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress.

Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar this year, is in fact treasured and valued most by Muslim Faithfuls throughout the world, where they strictly observe fasting from dawn to dusk. It is a month in which lies “Lailathul - Qadir” night which is most valued by all Muslims. Thousands and thousands gather all over the world to perform prayers after breaking fast during which prayers they seek All Mighty Allah’s forgiveness for all sins and seek His choicest blessing on everyone particularly the fasting Devotees, and pray for peace & amity among all human beings. And it is during this month Muslims observe strictly acts of charity to help the sick, needy and less fortunate.

Iftar ceremony was held under the tutelage of Hon. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, to imbibe and foster religious and racial unity.
