The annual event of Iftar ceremony, which is the evening meal for breaking the daily fast of the Ramalan month, was observed on the 09th of September 2009 at the Speaker’s official residence.
The event, which started in the evening, saw the presence of invitees including the Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Ambassadors of Arab countries, Muslim religious leaders, and various diplomats.
This event commenced with religious programmes such as ‘Kaseeda’ and ‘Bayaan’. Thereafter every body who participated in the function engaged in personal supplication (Dua). According to the Islamic belief, Almighty Allah accepts the supplications and repentance made before the breaking of fasting – Iftar. ‘Magrib’ prayer followed the Iftar at sunset and dinner was served thereafter. As usual, this event was once again sponsored by the Chairman of the Arabian Royal Group of Companies, Al-Haj M. B. M. Hamza JP.
Ramalan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and considered as a holy month by the Muslims world over. During this month of Ramalan they observe fasting continuously from dawn to dusk. Muslims start the fasting with their pre-dawn meal ‘Sahar’. Other than fasting there are many other meritorious deeds done by them during this holy month such as, ‘Zakath’ – charity, and ‘Sadaka’, ‘Zakathul Fitr’ – Alms giving and helping the under privileged people in the society. At the completion of a month of fasting Muslims all over the world celebrate the ‘Eid-ul-Fitr’ Festival.
This Iftar ceremony is organized by the Hon. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, in order to promote unity and harmony among religions and communities.
