About the Library
Location of the Library in Parliament complex
The Library is presently located in the South - Wing of the main Parliamentary building, and it occupies 9800 square feet on the first floor and 8500 square feet on the Ground floor. The Reference Division, Lending Division and the Newspaper Section also with the working area of the staff are housed in the first floor of the Library. The Ground floor houses the research division, Members mail division and the recently established Cyber cafe. The research division provides data, statistics and other relevant information. The Hansards of the House of Commons and Lords, the Annual Reports of Statutory bodies such as Government Corporations, Boards are available in the Ground Floor together with a vast area for leisure reading and studies for the Members. Facilities have been provided for Members to collect their mail from the Members mail division.
Opening Hours of the Library
Library is open from 8.30 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. on all working days. It is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. During Sitting days it is open from 8.00 a.m. until the end of the sittings of the House.
Subject Coverage
The subject range of books in the Library is extensive as well as comprehensive. It includes almost all subjects in the field of knowledge with special emphasis on subjects such as Political Science, International Affairs, Economics, Law, Public Administration, Social Welfare, Education, History, Geography, and Religion and so on. Advanced Scientific and Technological materials are excluded from the collection, taking into consideration the nature of the clientele of the library. Special attention has been paid constantly to build up the collection by acquiring literature in political, legal and international relations. A special effort is made to promote the library as a centre of excellence in the subject of Political Science. In addition to the above collection, the library has built up a collection of fictions in English, Sinhala and Tamil languages for the leisure reading of the Members. The overall collection of the library consists of about 34,000 volumes of which the major portion is in English. |
