The Speaker's Chair gifted by the House of Commons

The Chamber

The Chamber is rectangular in shape and occupies the height of two floors in the centre portion of the whole building. Eighteen silver flags- banners and standards of Kings, Temples and Korales on ornamental stainless steel posts and a seven foot tall insignia of Sri Lanka form a halo above the Chamber giving it dignity. The chamber has seating capacity for 232 members - 116 on either side of the speakers chair in air-conditioned comfort.

The Speaker's Chair is placed at the centre of the southern end. Immediately below the Speaker's Chair is the table for the Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General and Assistant Secretary-General of Parliament. The seats of the Serjeant-at-Arms and his deputy are placed beyond the Bar of the House facing the Speaker’s chair.

Further there are few special boxes in the lower portion of the Chamber for some specific purposes. The Boxes for Hansard Officials and the Parliament Officials are located in the right and left sides of the Chair respectively. The boxes for Parliamentary Interpreters and Government Officials are located opposite the Chair.

On the sides of the Chamber are wide Lobbies through which members enter. These Lobbies are suitably furnished to make them a comfortable place for members to sit and have informal discussions among themselves.
